The following list was extracted in the 1990s from an old Deputy Keeper’s report on public records. The spelling in the report is erratic and makes searching by a keyword difficult. Thankfully today this has been made far more easier by using wildcard searches on The National Archives online catalogue. However, not all of the entries have a county associated with them. Hence the list below does have some value to local historians.
The records listed below can be found in series 178 in the Exchequer class. They are not available on line and need to be consulted at The National Archives, Kew. The number that appears first should be preceded by ‘E 178/’. For example the first case below for Wedmore should be ordered with the reference ‘E 178/154’.
It is essential that you check The National Archives online catalogue for the right reference before you visit, or order the document you are interested in.
